Jayanta was born in Krishnaganj, India, in 1997. He completed his Bachelor’s in Chemistry from Vidyasagar College, University of Calcutta. He went on to earn his Master’s in Chemistry from IACS under the guidance of Prof. Rajib Kumar Goswami. During his one-year M.Sc. project, he was involved in efforts toward the total synthesis of Amphidinins G and A. This experience gave him hands-on expertise in handling natural products and complex scaffolds. During this time, he achieved notable milestones, including clearing the CSIR-NET and GATE exams.

During his Ph.D., he led innovative research utilizing photochemistry under the supervision of Prof. Joyram Guin. Using sulfonyl-oxime-ethers, he developed a catalytic variant and an oxidant-free methodology for incorporating oxime ether functional groups into inert C(sp3)-H bonds of feedstock chemicals. Additionally, he pioneered the first use of sulfonyl-oxime-ethers as a bifunctional reagent for olefin di-functionalisation under metal-free photochemical conditions.

Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bern in Katayev’s lab, working on advanced catalytic methodologies to tackle pressing challenges in sustainable organic synthesis.

Outside the lab, he enjoys reading both fiction and nonfiction, traveling, playing sports, and following and playing chess and cricket.
